Element Metal
Traditional Element Lake
The mirrored surface of a lake reflects like metal.   When the wind moves across the surface, it ripples with creativity as it is activated by the moving chi.    The lake, unlike running water is generally static in form and rests within the structured area that surrounds it.   From a vantage point, high above, the lake shimmers much as metal shimmers when seen on the ground.  Both the lake and metal are secured within the earth.

Understanding Metal

Where does metal come from In feng shui, metal is seen as coming from water.  The metal is seen as a solidified pool.  This idea possibly derived from the discovery of mercury.
Where does metal get its shape from Metal is associated with creativity, in many cultures.  The term mercurial, in western culture is associated with rapid changes of form and mood.    Even solid metals have been formed in forges, turning to liquid and then back to solid.
What is metal in feng shui Liquid metal forms pools, and therefore is associated with flowing shapes, particularly ovals, circles and arches.   In its unyielding form it is very yang and hard, and is more comparable to hard stone such as granite.  When heated, metal is white and when cold it is usually grey in color, when touched by flame it is blackened.  These are the natural feng shui associations with metal.

The most important characteristic of metal is its ability to be shaped.   In this it is a formative substance capable of transmutation, and it is for this reason associated with creativity.

Fire cuts metal and can destroy it, water cools metal making it brittle and forcing it to have form, thous it subdues metal.  Earth is home to veins of metal and in this way lends natural support.
Children Children are associated with play and creativity, they are very formative and are therefore associated with the rising sun and the element of metal.
