The bed is a haven of security.  Ask yourself where does a person have the greatest need of security, and the answer is clear.   When at rest a person is most defenseless and reliant on being in a safe and supporting environment.

When a person is suddenly awakaened it is important to quickly survey the room.   This is instinctive in nature, and when we meet our instinctive needs, we sleep better and allay subconscious fears.    When we can  see the entrance of the room from a safe secure position, we are going to naturally sleep the best.   This takes us back to our ancient and well founded principles and has deep roots in the psyche.   When we sleep without fear, it benefits us in numerous ways.  By creating an environment where we are safe, even at our most vulnerable, we send a secure vibration to the universe, which chi responds to well.

Bed Location
The command position is generally considered to be the position in the room furthest from the main door.  If  the room has multiple doors, you should be able to see them all and be able to identify anything or anyone entering into your space.   Aside from the main door, additional entrances may include balcony landings, windows, and bathroom doors.

In western feng shui the main room entrance is always along the North wall.    As a result in most rooms the bed should be placed in the South, Southwest or Southeast.   If the room is large and other considerations, such as secondary entrances are a factor, the bed could be in a commanding  position in the East or West.

Generally the bed should never be against the entrance wall, as this an inferior position as effort will have to be exerted to see the door.   Life will symbolically come up from behind you if your back is to the door.    A major principal of feng shui, is that your space is a manifistation of our will, and that your space affects and reflects your relationship to the world.
Some room layouts may force this type of setup, in which case you will want to be in the corner furthest from the entry, which is usually the Northeast or the Northwest.   If at all possible when you find yourself in one of these locations, your back should face the east or west wall rather than the entry wall.

Mirrors may well be advised as remedies, although you should research this carefully as mirrors in the bedroom have significant connotations.     Another potential solution is to create a physical path, such as around an object for anyone seeking your audience to travel, before reaching  your bed.    The ideal, of course, is to move your bed to a suitable command position.

  Alignment with the door
Ideally the bed should be placed so it is out of the direct path created by the chi moving down the hallway into the bedroom.   When the bed is in the path of   the door it produces fast moving chi from outside.  If there are no other options, a low (so you can see the door properly) solid object can slow the chi and keep life from coming at you fast while you are trying to rest.
Something like a dresser or a chest may be suitable, particularly if it can be positioned so that you are able to enter the bed from both sides.

  Access
The bed should ideally be accessible from both sides.    This is important if you wish to convey to the universe, through your mindset and presentation, that you are willing to enter into a partnership of equals.    A bed which has one side against a wall, limits opportunities for one of the partners as access control becomes an issue.   An imbalanced partnership is naturally limiting and generally undesireable.    Even if you are single and intend to stay that way, it is good to have options when getting up in the morning and rolling out into a solid wall is not a pleasant way to start the day.
  Size
When you are looking at where your bed goes it is also important to see how it fits in the room, ideally the bed is well proportioned to the space and is suitable for a couple to sleep in comfortably.
A larger bed gives room to sleep comfortably, but if the bed is too large it may decrease the natural intimacy you feel with your partner.     A small bed may limit opportunities and space in a relationship.

The proportion of the room, and your relationship needs should guide you, as well as the physical size of you and your partner.   Generally a queen sized bed is considered ideal for most people, although a king size or double bed may be more appropriate if you are in a room where the space is better fit in this way.

There should be room for other things beside the bed, so that when you wake up you feel that you have space to get ready, operate and otherwise prepare for the world.    Where you start the day and complete the day is almost always the bedroom, so developing this space is very important.
